Figuring out Fic Preferences

I think I have now figured out the type of fic I like to read and write.

The biggest problem in the Making a Heroine opening chapter for my prereader was that it was too bare bones after I had first written it.

Just yesterday or so, I favourited my first Harry Potter fanfic on Fanfiction.net, A Squib Worth. It has a basic premise, it builds on that, and it doesn't spend too many words on material that isn't necessary. There are no sideplots, there isn't much description of things.

That is how I want my fanfic -- to convey a new idea. The fic I mentioned is just shy of 22,000 words, so it's not a terribly long fic. Yet it presents a nice plot spanning a long time period, in my opinion addresses most of the points necessary and feels complete.

In many cases, I skim through the fic, not even reading every sentence. I usually get the idea of the general plot progression well enough. I don't focus on the finer nuances of text. This probably means that I'm not a fan of fine literature but more of a consumer of cheap fiction.

Maybe my opinions of what constitutes a good fic are influenced by my past work, but still...
